“Echtra” Performance with Illustration Design Department graduate Brendan Atkins
15 Jun / 1:00 PM
Duration: 60 minutes
Location: NCAD Yellow Box, Red Square
.
“Echtra” is an installation work designed to create a dedicated space for Irish storytelling. Through a mixture of set design and live performance, this immersive environment takes the viewer on a journey through Irish storytelling, recounting stories both from Ireland’s ancient mythology and its more recent folktales.
.
Illustration Design Department graduate Brendan Atkins draws directly on the walls using black marker to create a storybook-like environment, while using foam cut outs to extend the illustrations into the space itself. Coloured lights add visual ambience to the space, while soundscapes and music plays on a speaker to create an immersive atmosphere.
The performance comprises the lesser known stories from the Irish oral tradition, forgotten or ignored due to dark or queer themes.. Atkins is particularly interested in promoting Irish storytelling to adults.
.
When no performance is happening, pre-recorded stories fill the installation space.
.
Not recommended for children.
