Berry Picking is a contemporary interiors collection taking inspiration from the poem Blackberry Picking by Seamus Heaney, which encapsulates the realities of growing up and losing colourful childhood memories through the depiction of blackberry picking from when it's freshly picked to when it begins to rot.
Berry Picking is aimed towards the luxury curtain market and uses hand dyed silk to provide an authentic opulent feel. Key themes from the poem - hope, optimism and nostalgia are used to create three distinctive colour palettes within the collection. Dyeing techniques; ikat, shibori and dip dying are used to mimic beautiful coloured stains from the berries while also creating a uniquely sophisticated aesthetic to remind us that adulthood does not have to be dull. The incorporation of grid lines breaks up the fluid nature of the dyes and helps aid the fusion of traditional techniques and contemporary interior aesthetics, a key focus in this project.
