I’m interested in slow work that examines non-precious, everyday material objects. I use methods of disassembling to investigate these objects. Allowing them to take up space, they transform and reveal themselves in unfamiliar ways. Text is part of my practice formed in the making, offering another dimension to the work that supports the space between the objects.
In October 2020 my mother died. Suddenly.
Focusing on an old warmer she owned, this work attempts a conversation with that suddenness, the sense of presence that prevails, and how tenuous connections make up our own presence in this world. From its inception, the objects’ materials have been chronicling a connection with place, time and matter. Unpicking the garment shifts the materiality of things that escape into the world; this re-ordering in space and time presents perspectives of the garment that were previously unseen.
