PlayLight is designed to encourage play to take place in public spaces through lighting. Both play and lighting play huge roles in our cognition, mood, circadian rhythm and how we interact with others in a space. PlayLight explores how lighting can be designed to encourage play in public spaces, in particular object, social and spectator play.
My approach to design is experimental. Throughout this project I conducted lighting experiments to contextualise my research informing the design of light-play.
PlayLight uses sensors to detect motion within a space. The light activates following detection of motion. The light changes as the location of the person changes. This is achieved through the use of mirrors to direct and redirect the light. This allows the person to choose the lighting outcome.
PlayLight is a lighting project installation designed to allow for the encouragement of collaboration and the prompting of various types of play.
