My work explores memory and how aspects of my family archive from the early twentieth century are reflective of our shared history. It presents found objects that are markers of an Ireland that laid judgement upon mothers and their children born outside of wedlock. The absence of a father is evident, however this void was filled with paternal love from the community. This archive is an invitation to access and reconstruct what is past. It allows the observer to reinterpret the material and explore personal memories to create new narratives for today.
My process involves collecting and manipulating found materials, to create digital collages which have been constructed into a series of artist books. The abundance of printed matter extends beyond the parameters of its containment, reflecting the infinite and fragmentary nature of memory. Memories are constantly revisited and re-evaluated, allowing new narratives to evolve. We present the fragments of our lives for future generations to weave and redeem.
