Failure is prevalent in every aspect of day-to-day life, consequently the failure to conform often becomes closely linked with how we perceive ourselves. Uniformity, and the failure to meet the expectations set, has been a recurring theme throughout my education. I have always felt that the fear of failure is the main cause of moral perfectionism in my own life.
However, instead of failure being a self limiting concept, I propose that failure is a key factor in growth and success as both an artist and an educator. In this work, I examine the consequence of failure in my life, and aim to reduce the fear of imperfection stemming from the artistic process.
Using salvaged generic ceramic to articulate conformity, I reference memorable quotes and narratives I was told in an attempt to make me conform while in the education system.
