Emotions can run high during times of conflict, making it harder to express how we feel and what we need, without blaming the other person or becoming defensive. For young people in foster care and their carers, this breakdown in communication can lead to unresolved arguments, which in turn can contribute to either party’s desire to end the placement.
Small Steps is an app that uses AI to support effective communication between young people in foster care and their carers, during emotionally challenging times. It does this by providing a private space for self-expression, allowing users to better understand their thoughts, feelings and needs, before supporting them in communicating them to the other person, using non-confrontational ‘I’ statements.
Placement moves can come with great feelings of loss and instability for young people. By supporting both parties in feeling heard and being understood, placement stability and well-being can be promoted.
