I am interested in glass as both a material and a metaphor of fluidity.
Molten glass is heated in pots positioned above supported ramps. Heated to a high temperature, glass is allowed flow, taking its form from the ramp by means of gravity. The technique used is called 'kiln forming' and is inspired by Keith Cummings, a glass artist.
Drought and increasing temperature is causing crops to fail in many parts of the world. Elsewhere, global warming results in flooding.
In its flowing form, my glass works represent rising water levels. Air bubbles allude to the organic nature of water, while lines in the glass depict natural movement. The undulating shape of my work seems organic, narrowing and widening as if moving around obstacles in its path.
