This body of work explores themes of temporality…transience, impermanence, mortality…and reflects on the essence of what it means to be human. With the recurring use of oppositions of shadow and light, the vertical and the horizontal, my work considers the paradox of duality and the human condition.
My practice as a visual artist incorporates painting and sculpture, and involves the materiality of drawing, pigment, resin, ash, fragments and found objects. The non representational nature of the work speaks to the ephemeral quality of the themes being considered.
An important aspect of my research process is the photographic image that registers the fleeting but subjectively meaningful moment or detail. This quality, referred to as ‘the punctum’ by Roland Barthes, informs the overall sensibility and approach in my practice.
The space of the installation provokes consideration of the relationships between the works, the self, and the space.
