What is Woman? explores the theme of the idealised female body image and body insecurities, with a focus on the uncertain future of plastic surgery and its effects on our bodies. Through my ES5 stoneware hand-built sculptures of women, I aim to portray the potential consequences of plastic surgery.
Femininity is a recurring theme in my previous research, and I find that working three-dimensionally is the best way to express my views and opinions. I begin by creating small clay models and glaze tests to get a sense of the bigger picture before moving on to the final sculpture. I use press moulding, hand building, and slip and scoring techniques to complete each piece.
My inspiration stems from celebrity culture and how this hinders self esteem. Ultimately, my goal is to inspire women to love their bodies and think about the future if we stop loving our natural selves.
